William Samuels "Rusty"

February 23, 1957 - June 15, 2021

Rusty was a long-time resident of Garfield Heights. He was a car enthusiast, learning at an early age how to repair and restore classic cars. Rusty worked alongside his father growing up and also owned his own auto body shop in Maple Heights for many years. He relished the music, movies, shows, and cars of his generation. Rusty was an avid Cleveland sports fan. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and willingness to help others. He was a friend to many. Rusty is survived by daughter, Megan Samuels, granddaughter, Marli Miller, sister Diane Sellers (Gary), brothers Ricky Samuels (Jan) and Jeffrey Samuels, brother-in-law Bill Farmer and stepmother, Kathy Samuels. Rusty was preceded in death by father, Garnett "Jeff" Samuels, mother, Marian Samuels, and sister, Donna Farmer.

 A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at Ottawa Point Picnic Area in Brecksville Reservation from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

 

Paul Retsch

April 23, 1947 – May 24, 2021

Paul Retsch, 74 of Parma, Ohio passed away early Monday morning, May 24, 2021.  Paul was born in Waldsassen, Germany on April 23, 1947. He was the son of the late Richard Zbigniew Retsch and Olga Valeria Retsch of Parma Heights, OH.

Paul was a 1965 graduate of Valley Forge High School in Parma Heights, OH.  He graduated in 1969 from Bowling Green State University with his then wife and mother of his two children, Jennifer Ryder.  He continued to be friends with Jen throughout his life; however, she also passed away on May 5, 2021.  

Paul was employed by various companies including the Center for Disease Control (CDC), VWR Scientific, MCI and the City of San Diego, at the time he eventually retired.  He was an avid speaker, conversationalist and writer, who also taught courses at San Diego State University.  He enjoyed travelling and taking cruises with his love and wife Tish.  He loved his family, friends and animals, especially his rescue Shih-Tzu, Buddy.  He was so proud of his daughter Jocelyn, son Michael and his granddaughter Hanna.

Paul is survived by his loving wife Tish Hill-Retsch, Brother George Retsch-Bogart and wife Carol of Chapel Hill, NC, his Sister Anna Singleton and husband Don of Williamstown, MA, Daughter Jocelyn Odijk and husband Chris of Parma, OH, his Son Michael Ryder of San Diego, CA and Granddaughter Hanna Ryder of Omaha, NE.  

Paul was most proud his granddaughter Hanna, niece Grace Singleton, nephews Alex Retsch-Bogart and Sam Bogart, Sam’s wife Kristy and their daughter, the newest member of the Bogart/Retsch family, great-niece Tallulah Rose Bogart.  He loved his dog Buddy who lives in Texas with Tish’s friend Kerri along with many loyal friends he made across the country.  Tony Arthur was his friend since high school and college who lives in Texas with his wife Carol.  After many years of friendship through regular phone calls, once Paul moved to Texas, he and Tony spent daily workout sessions together.

Paul will be remembered for his kind heart, loving soul, sharp intellect and wonderful story telling abilities.  He had words for setting and everyone and remembered everything until dementia took that away at the very end of his life.  His celebration of life service is pending at this writing.

Michael S. Szczesniak, age 72 of Garfield Hts. 

Son of John and Helen (Deka) Szczesniak.

Beloved husband of Karen; loving father of Lori Szczesniak, Michelle Freeman, and Dena Szczesniak.

Grandfather of Billy, Ryan, Britney, Roni, Adena, Dakota, and Justine.

Brother of Cathy Haime.

Army veteran, proudly served his country in the Vietnam war. Avid bowler at Pawnee Lanes, Member of the Bedford Eagles. Devoted sports fan.

SUZANNE M. HORVATH (nee Horvath) devoted wife of Carl E. (deceased); loving mother of Jennifer, Christopher and Stephen (Carrie); grandmother of Brienna Bowles; sister of John (Pam); sister-in-law of Ronald (Paula) and Julianna Baillis; aunt of numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. Preceded in death by brothers-in-law Louis (Carol) and Frederick Baillis. 

The family will receive friends, Thursday, June 3 from 5-8pm at Vito-Nero 6130 Turney Road, Garfield Heights. 

Mass of Christian burial, Friday, June 4, 10 am at Church of the Resurrection 32001 Cannon Road, Solon. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH) The service can be viewed via live stream or recording at: www.churchoftheresurrection.org Interment Crown Hill Cemetery. 

Face masks are required, and social distancing will be observed at the funeral home and the church.

Vivian Adell Byrd (nee Brewster) of Maple Heights. Beloved wife of Ronald Byrd; mother of Allen Jones (deceased) and LeShanna Byrd (John); grandmother of A’Laiya, Journey, and Brooke; daughter of Milton and Dorothy Brewster (both deceased); sister of Jacqueline Lawrence and the following deceased: Alfred Sturges, Delores Meredith, and Milton Brewster Jr. Vivian retired in 2011, she worked at St. Vincent Charity Hospital for 41 years.  She enjoyed helping raise her grandchildren and spending time with her family. 

 A private memorial service will be held on a later date.

Loving and devoted grandfather of Jasmine (Jordan), Mitchell III, Julie, Evan, and Erin and Great Grandfather of Zoey. Dear Brother of Alan, Brenda, Dennis, Jimmy, Evelyn, Deanna, Randy, Amy, and Wayne. He was also a Dear Uncle, Cousin and Friend to all. Mitchell enjoyed Camping, Traveling, Family Dinners, being a grandfather, and was an animal lover.

Thomas A. Balzano age 75. Passed away peacefully on May 17, 2021. Cherished son of the late Joseph Balzano Sr., and Anna Marie. Loving brother of Joanna Tarach, Antoinette Scarvelli, Fred Balzano, James Balzano, and the late Joseph Balzano Jr. Cherished uncle, great uncle, and friend to many.

Gary E. Czir, 64, passed away May 13, 2021 in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. He was born March 18, 1957 in Cleveland, Ohio. Gary was a Navy veteran and lifelong Cleveland Browns fan who loved riding his motorcycle on nice days. The only thing he enjoyed more than football and his motorcycle, was being a grandfather. He loved his grandsons, Bence and Cameron, very much. Gary is survived by his two sons, Eric Czir and Nicholas (Courtney) Czir, his brother Gerry (Cathy) Czir, two sisters, Diane and Linda, grandchildren, Cameron (Eric) and Bence (Nicholas), and former spouse and friend, Karen Harris. Gary always said he was “a Jack of all trades, but a master of none”. This was especially true. Anytime someone was in need of something, he was always able and willing to help. To everyone, he was a loyal friend. To his buddies, his grandsons, he was the world’s greatest “Paha”.

Family will receive friends at Vito-Nero Funeral Home, 6130 Turney Road, Garfield Heights, OH 44125., May 20th from 6:00 PM-7:00PM with military honors at the funeral home at 7PM.  

All family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend, masks will be required. 

 

Kathleen J. Yancer

September 26, 1949 - May 8, 2021

Kathleen Joy Yancer died Saturday, May 8, 2020 at Ames House, Westlake. Kathy was born in Elyria on Sept. 26, 1949, the oldest child of Donald and Evelyn (Reynolds) Yancer. She graduated from Elyria High School in 1967 and spent her life in the area. Kathy worked for various local banks in the 1990s and 2000s. She enjoyed puzzles, reading history, genealogy, and watching movies. Kathy was associated with the Sheffield Village Historical Society for several years. She is survived by a daughter, Leslie Rodriguez; two sisters, Donna Cambarare and Peggy Cassidy; and a brother, Mike. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald Brent Yancer, in 2015; and her beloved grandmothers, Elsie Goetz Yancer and Dorothy Jackson Reynolds.

At Kathy’s request, there will be no visitation or services. 

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Avon Historical Society, 2940 Stoney Ridge Road, Avon OH 44011.

Beloved son of Kathleen (nee Arnold) and the late James T. Sender; Much loved brother of Kristopher Krieger (Michelle), Adam, Matthew, Daniel (deceased), Nathan (Adama), Katelynn, Allison, Molly and Erin Sender; Loving uncle of Marissa, Michael, James, Grace, Daniel, Andrew, Elizabeth, Ethan (deceased), Gabriel, Ariel, Thomas, Liam, Alexis, Amari, Gavin, Axel, Connor, Logan and Jacob; Cherished friend of Brandilee Nagel; stepfather to Sahvanna and adoring step grandpa to Aubrianna. Patrick also leaves behind several cousins, aunts and uncles who dearly loved him, as well as many friends who miss him greatly. Patrick has touched so many lives and his tragic passing has left a break in our hearts that will never truly mend.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 12th from 5-8 PM at Vito-Nero Funeral Home, 6130 Turney Road, Garfield Heights, OH 44125.

Patrick's Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Name Church, 8328 Broadway Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44105 on Thursday, May 13 at 10 AM.
