Benito Roel Bumanlag Corpus

Benito Roel Bumanlag Corpus, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.‍

‍Benito was a good husband and is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years Rosalina (Barredo) and father to eight children: Maria Theresa Carozza (Thomas); Marianne Watts (Michael) with grandchild Clarissa Brigham (Aaron) and great grandchild (Brody); Benjamin Corpus; Ben Corpus Jr. (Alison) with grandchildren Elizabeth and Brandon; Melinda Nullick (David) with two grandchildren Kyle Kennedy (Annalisa), Naomi Kane (Isaac) with great grandchild (Arthur), two step grandchildren Darien and Vanessa, and late Danielle Ani; Grace Novaky (Kyle) with two grandchildren Samuel and Matthew Robinson; Gilbert Corpus (Sarah) with two grandchildren Jacob Olson and Mariah Corpus; and finally, Kathryn Horne (Jon) with four grandchildren Zachary, and late Daniel, Reggie and Manny).

Benito was born on June 12, 1934, to Eliodoro Corpus and Romana Bumanlag in Cotabato City, Philippines, and siblings Lucille with daughter Cynthia Casabar, Eliodoro with children Charlie, Connie, and Flor, and Sister Maria Assumpta. After graduating from the Medical College of Manila, Philippines, he worked as a Physician for five years before coming to the United States in 1972.

Since 1972, Benito has worked at various hospital systems in Northeast Ohio as a Surgical and Physician Assistant, including Marymount, Polyclinic, St. Luke’s, and St. Michael’s.  Benito also worked for nearly five years at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY.‍ Benito was a proud member of the Philippine American Ministry for over two decades.

As a young teenager, Benito was taught how to cook by his father. Benito had aspirations to become a pilot, but was influenced by his sister, Lucille, to pursue medicine as she had.  Outside his medical profession, Benito became increasingly excellent at cooking Filipino food that he shared with family and friends.  He loved and cherished having family gatherings on major holidays, as well as birthdays and anniversaries, and let’s not forget, his joke-telling moments made an indelible impression at these parties.  If he hadn’t pursued medicine, he most likely would have become a professional chef.  Playing Mahjong and going to the casinos were also recreational activities, and towards the end, he always listened to the English singer Matt Munro.  Benito, for the most part, kept a simple lifestyle, focusing most on serving his loved ones through passion and his love for cooking.

Family will receive friends on Monday December 1, 2025 from 8:30AM -10:30 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Church 4750 Turney Rd. Garfield Hts, OH 44125. Mass will begin at 11:00 am. Followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery in Cuyahoga Hts.
